Salò is known as a boutique destination with historical flair. It is the largest city on the western shore of Lake Garda. Sheltered from the wind in a gently curving bay, Salo has an unusually long promenade with beautiful beaches on the south side of the bay.
Famous residents of Salò were the painter Zeno Veronese (1484-1554), and the violin maker Gaspare Bertolotti (1540-1609).
Since Roman times Salò is the focal point of the western shore of Lake Garda. During World War II, Salò was the seat of the Repubblica Sociale Italiana, under the leadership of Benito Mussolini.
